“The bulletin drastically alters how the role of public corporations is conceived,” wrote Mr. Fischer in an email. “It represents a dramatic shift from the idea that the driving force animating corporate decision-making is increasing shareholder value, to the notion that corporations are, in effect, public citizens that have to incorporate into their actions considerations of their social impact. It is hard to overstate how radical a change this is in how corporate purpose is conceptualized.”
