Moses Singer Supports the People of Israel

Moses Singer stands in solidarity with the people of Israel. We support the families and individuals tragically impacted by the senseless and inhumane acts occurring in Israel.  Acts of violence against innocent civilians constitute an inherent threat to humanity as a whole.

Standing in Solidarity

The Moses Singer community is saddened and horrified by the recent tragic Atlanta shootings of Asian Americans. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, anti-Asian violence has intensified across the U.S. and the latest attacks are a dreadful reminder of the impact of race- and gender-based hatred at a time that calls for tolerance and healing. We denounce and condemn the bigotry, hatred and violence and stand in solidarity with our Asian American colleagues and the Asian and Pacific Islander community. We remain committed to combat all forms of discrimination and we will continue to work for greater diversity, equity and inclusion, pursue more pro bono work, and promote a deeper understanding and acceptance of each other to make our communities safe for all.

We say their names.  We also recognize that their names represent only a small number of the Black people whose lives have been lost to America’s long and violent legacy of systemic racial inequality and injustice.  Recent events – the horrific displays of police brutality, the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color, the increase in harassment of people of Asian descent during the pandemic – have shed a bright light on an undeniable truth:  the scourge of racism, inequality and injustice continues to pervade American society.

We, as a firm, want to acknowledge the trauma and pain caused by recent events, and we stand in solidarity with those who have been denied justice.  Moses Singer, as part of the reaffirmation of its core values and beliefs, is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive and compassionate environment, not only at the firm, but also in our communities at large. In the words of Thurgood Marshall, “Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.”

As part of that commitment, we are taking action to combat discrimination and injustice, including by supporting, financially and through pro bono legal services, nonprofit organizations dedicated to eliminating race-based discrimination and ensuring the health and well-being of all people.  To that end, the firm is making an initial donation to the National Urban League and is considering making future contributions to similar organizations. In the days and weeks to come, we will also be soliciting specific thoughts and feedback as to how Moses Singer can continue to promote kindness, compassion, and inclusion within our own office and we invite the sharing of any ideas with us at any time.

Moses Singer condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine and stands in unity with its brave people. The firm echoes the call of the Ukrainian Bar Association to lawyers worldwide, to end the war and to restore the rule of law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The firm is donating to Global Giving’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund and will also match any donations made by members of the Moses Singer community to the Fund.  We urge others to do what they can to help meet the need created by this serious humanitarian crisis.

Pro Bono / Public Service

Moses Singer has long been associated with public service and philanthropy. Furthermore our attorneys are actively engaged in numerous professional organizations focused on legal and related disciplines.

Since the founding of our firm, our partners have demonstrated a commitment to philanthropy.   The Henry and Lucy Moses Fund, started by our founder and his wife, awards millions of dollars of gifts to New York City charities.  Mr. Moses was a leader in hospital philanthropy, serving first as president of Montefiore Hospital and later as chairman of the board. He was also a director and member of the planning commission of the Hospital Council of Greater New York and a member of the council of the United Hospital Fund.   Today the fund provides support for hospitals, Jewish and other welfare funds, higher and legal education programs, assistance for minorities, the disabled social service agencies, cultural and environmental concerns, including Central Park in New York, NY.

Currently, our partners endow several chairs at Columbia Law School, and many of them serve on boards of foundations and other tax-exempt organizations.  The list of organizations we support financially and professionally includes Center Against Domestic Violence, the Maurer Foundation, the Educational Alliance, the White Institute, the Foundation Fighting Blindness and numerous worthy religious and educational institutions.

Moses Singer attorneys have achieved leadership positions in a wide range of professional groups such as the American Bar Association, New York Bar Association, NY County Lawyers Association, NY Estate Planning Council, and the Labor & Employment Relations Association of NY.  We place great emphasis on legal ethics, with one of our partners serving as Chair of the Committee on Professional Discipline of the New York City Bar Association.  Attorneys are regular speakers at professional groups nationwide and contribute extensively to educational and trade publications.

Our Pro Bono Committee oversees a program providing billable hours credit for pro bono involvement and reaches out to community organizations to develop suitable opportunities. We maintain referral relationships with organizations such as the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and the New York City Bankruptcy Assistance Project. Alternatively, attorneys may also choose to engage in pro bono activities which they find independently.

The firm proudly values civic and cultural engagement outside the office.  We count in our midst accomplished musicians, singers, photographers, athletes plus an award winning chess player.  Several of our attorneys have international backgrounds, with foreign language capability in 20 languages.
