Howard A. Fischer and Isaac Greaney authored an article titled, 'Taking Fartcoin Seriously: Why Meme Coins Matter.'

Fartcoin is a joke cryptocurrency, created around Halloween of last year.  Although the value has fallen significantly, hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of the currency can trade daily. Its success has led to the creation of various copycat tokens.  There is a tendency to dismiss the impact of the meme coin market given its appeal to absurdism – but like any multibillion dollar market, there are bad actors and misconduct that needs to be dealt with. Just because something is funny doesn’t mean it should not be taken seriously. Any government regulation to mitigate that should be welcomed.
