Jason E. Johnson was quoted in the Global Data Review article "New internet protection initiative will need regulations to drive compliance" saying that the group’s efforts will likely only have a significant impact if countries – such as the U.S. – that don’t have comprehensive national data privacy laws are spurred to enact federal regulations,

“This is an agreement to protect something – in this case the internet – without a legal backing in a particular country like a law or regulation,” Johnson said. “It won’t mean much. It's just, ‘we are happy to keep the internet open and we disagree [with what] Russia and China are doing’.”
