Ethical Obligations in Cyber Security: The Risks You Must Know, The Responsibilities You Cannot Avoid

July 12, 2018 - July 14, 2018

Devika Kewalramani

Queen’s Landing Hotel
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Practitioners today are facing increasing security risks with the advent of new technology in law practice. How we use this rapidly changing technology critically impacts our ability as lawyers to protect client confidentiality and privilege. Thus, lawyers need to understand the security features of new technology they use and take steps to safeguard electronic client records through digital communication over the internet, email, Google Docs, Drop Box, and other platforms.

Devika Kewalramani's presentation will highlight the ethical duties to avoid cyber breaches of law firm computer systems and will address the question, “what is enough and what is not?” She will discuss the guidance by bar association ethics committees on cyber security best practices for law firms and the obligations for client notification if a law firm computer system is hijacked or hacked.

Devika's presentation will be on Saturday, July 14, 2018 from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m.
