Technology is an increasingly vital aspect of law practice that many practitioners feel overwhelmed by. Technology changes much faster than the law, and many attorneys use new technologies without fully appreciating the ethical and professional liabilities of using said technology. Comment 8 to Rule 1.1 of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct requires attorneys to understand the risks and benefits associated with using relevant technology, and some states have now changed their CLE requirements to specifically require technology training. As technology will only play a larger part in both the practice of law and life in general, now is the time to move toward greater awareness and education of technological issues and concerns in the practice of law.
This program would be a presentation from a panel that would discuss awareness of technology issues (for both public and private attorneys) with an emphasis on ethics and professionalism.
Devika Kewalramani will be presenting Cyber Ethics: Understanding Your Ethical Obligations in a Cybersecurity Breach during this year's American Bar Association's Annual Meeting.
