Dean W. Steele is a partner in our Corporate and Maritime and Multimodal Transportation practice groups. His experience is general corporate and dispute resolution with a focus in shipping transactions and maritime litigation. He has experience handling an extensive range of international transactions in the areas of shipping finance, compliance and regulatory matters, bankruptcy and restructuring, as well as commercial shipping.

Dean has represented shipping companies in connection with the sale and purchase of various types of vessels, including complex oil supply vessels, shipping joint ventures, vessel financing and registration, as well as shipbuilding contracts, management and agency agreements, and charter parties.

Dean also has broad range of experience in maritime litigation and arbitration matters, including charter party disputes, vessel arrests, shipbuilding contract controversies, as well as, pollution and environmental issues. He also has experience in the sale, purchase, insurance and financing of private aircraft, yachts and islands.

Most recently, Dean has expanded his practice to include representation of a corporate client in all matters related to the operation of the business, working with states, federal and international agencies, and the private sector.

His unique skill set makes him a valuable asset to clients who regularly turn to him to navigate the most complex legal issues surrounding shipping finance, compliance, regulatory matters, bankruptcy and restructuring, as well as general corporate and commercial challenges. One of his recent engagements involved representing ExxonMobil in negotiating a multi-million dollar payment within days of filing eight cases for security of their claims in the Eastern District of NY.

Dean is a Master Mariner with 10 years of sea service on underway replenishment vessels, including ammunition carrying vessels, container ships, tankers, ROROs, and a hospital ship. Prior to joining Moses & Singer LLP, Dean spent 2 years at another firm and 11 years as the Associate General Counsel for a private ship owner; he started his law career as an associate at a global law firm.
