November 2, 2016
Devika Kewalramani will serve as a panelist at Thomson Reuters’ inaugural summit on risk management, legal governance, compliance and ethics for corporate and in-house counsel. Devika’s panel will address, “Managing Ethical Challenges in Conflicts of Interest, Compliance and Risk Management.” The panelists will discuss how despite the best laid plans to avoid conflicts of interest and manage legal and compliance risks, conflicts may inevitably arise in a variety of situations, particularly when working within very niche markets. As conflicts of interest can often be fact-specific and difficult to identify, theeby limiting a lawyer's or law firm’s ability to take on new clients or continue with existing ones, it is critical that conflicts are carefully analyzed and resolved to avoid, among other things, malpractice liability, ethical violations and professional discipline. The panelists will consider the following topics:
- Identifying and evaluating conflicts of interest
- Deploying proven compliance risk assessment safeguards
- Finding a balance between being overly cautious and not viewing conflicts seriously enough
- Applying a litmus test to determine whether a reasonable conflict exists
