Taking Down Your Shingle in New York: Ethics Rule Sets Forth Duties

This article discusses an issue of tantamount importance for scores of retiring and career-changing attorneys in New York State: selling a law practice. Nearly half a million attorneys are at or above the retirement age, with more attorneys leaving the practice of law every year. Thanks to Rule 1.17 of the New York Rules of Professional Conduct, these attorneys may bear the fruits of their labor in a way that is not calculated hourly.
